Thobeka Mzwakali – A Rose Among the Rubble in Construction and Mining

by Tia

As Women’s Month draws to a close, Saint-Gobain Africa, is proud to celebrate the journey of Thobeka Mzwakali, a ground-breaking entrepreneur and the founder of Impophoma Projects. Thobeka’s story is one of resilience, determination, and breaking barriers in the male-dominated fields of construction and mining. Her journey stands as an inspiration to women across South Africa who aspire to defy the odds and carve their own paths.

Thobeka’s venture into construction and mining began in 2008 after she made the bold decision to leave the corporate world and co-found a small company focused on the complete installation of fuel depots in the oil and gas industry. It was here, while overseeing operations and managing projects, that she discovered her passion for construction. As her company expanded into the mining sector, Thobeka honed her expertise, managing significant projects for industry giants such as Sasol, Shell, BP Masana, and Chevron.

In 2020, undeterred by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thobeka founded Impophoma Projects, a company specializing in construction and yellow plant hiring. Today, Impophoma Projects stands as a demonstration of Thobeka’s determination and her belief in the power of women to lead and succeed in the construction industry.

“Being the sole owner of a 100% Black woman-owned and controlled company is one of my greatest achievements,” says Mzwakali. “Every small victory we achieve is proof of our hard work and serves as both a significant win and a powerful validation of our journey.”

One of Thobeka’s proudest moments came during a large-scale project in Limpopo’s Mopani District, where her company was contracted to install polyurethane floor coverings in district hospitals. “We executed the project so well that the MEC of the Health Department was thoroughly impressed with our work. It’s moments like these that remind me of why I do what I do.”

Thobeka’s relationship with Technical Finishes, part of Saint-Gobain Africa, has been a key factor in her success. “I have worked with them for many years and have always enjoyed their outstanding service. The quality of their products has enabled my company to deliver on our brand promise of providing high-quality, durable products.”

Thobeka encourages other women to pursue careers in construction and mining. “Women are breaking barriers and fighting hard to be seen and heard. Once you’ve started, remain resilient and focused on your goals. Challenges should be viewed as opportunities, and it’s important to always remind yourself of the passion that led you to this career in the first place.”

Thobeka’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength, power, and resilience that women demonstrate every day. As Women’s Month comes to a close, Saint-Gobain Africa is proud to honour Thobeka Mzwakali and women like her who continue to push beyond boundaries and inspire the next generation of female leaders in Africa.
